Wimbledon Embraces Video Challenge Technology in 2025.

The Championships tennis court with replay technology

Wimbledon will follow the US and Australian Opens in implementing replay technology.

Video review systems will be launched at The Championships in the upcoming tournament.

Athletes will gain the ability to challenge particular decisions from the official, echoing the system already in use at each of the American Grand Slam and the Australian Open.

This technology is slated for use on Centre Court and Court One throughout the tournament and on the remaining featured courts when they are staging singles matches.

This move comes just a season following the All England Club rolled out electronic line calling, which brought an end to the longstanding role of line officials.

Reviewable Decisions

Competitors cannot to challenge the accuracy of the electronic line calling, but they can request the official to review specific decisions, such as:

  • If a tennis ball has bounced twice.
  • If a ball made contact with an rival's racket or person during play.
  • Potential hindrance at the conclusion of a rally.

Importantly, there will be no cap on the amount of challenges a player can initiate.

A Recent Example

A recent incident took place in Indian Wells recently, where Daniil Medvedev initiated the review system against his opponent.

The British player conceded it was a difficult situation for the umpire, but believed his rival had "played the rules effectively."

Official Aurelie Tourte viewed a video and determined Draper was responsible for interference, awarding the rally to Medvedev.

Wider Implementation

This technology aren't exclusive to major tournaments. It has been in use at the US Open since 2023 and the Aussie Open since 2025.

Additionally, it is becoming more common on the WTA circuit, and by next season the men's ATP Tour will have video reviews in place at every one of its tournaments.

Other Changes

A further change at The Championships 2025 involves the addition of visual indicators on displays to support the audio calls from the electronic line calling system.

This addresses situations where spectators have occasionally been uncertain if a shot was in or out.

In other news, with exactly 100 days remaining until the start of the tournament, organizers have also revealed an increase in daily capacity at the qualifiers in Roehampton.
