Trump's Woke Alarm Misses Europe's Real Danger: Technological Stagnation.

Donald Trump's national security strategy offers a misguided view of Europe. The document asserts that unrestrained immigration and so-called "progressive" policies pose an existential risk to European civilization. However, this argument rests on a serious misinterpretation of the reality. The true danger facing the EU is not societal but economic and technological backwardness.

A Glaring Growth Gap Separating Europe and the US

The data reveal a sobering contrast. From 2008 and 2023, American economic output surged by 87%, compared to a mere 13.5% growth for the EU. During this time, EU GDP per capita dropped from over three-quarters to just 50% of the American figure. Strikingly, even the poorest US state now boasts a greater average income than major EU nations like Italy and France.

Today, roughly 50% of the global top fifty tech companies are US-based, while only four are from Europe.

The Innovation Deficit: The Core Question

This widening economic gap stems from stronger productivity growth in the United States, fueled by breakthroughs and better use of resources. The scene of world technology leadership is decidedly American. Over the past five decades, 241 US firms have scaled into companies valued at over ten billion dollars, versus just 14 in the European continent.

This gap raises a pressing issue: In the race for future industries like semiconductors, AI, and fusion energy, what is the EU stand? Most analysts agree it is largely a two-horse race between the US and China, with Europe starting at a clear handicap.

Underlying Factors of the Continent's Innovation Gap

A number of key factors account for this innovation chasm.

  • Financing Ecosystem: The US boasts a far deeper and agile system for funding startups. Europe still lacks a true capital markets union, a factor that caps the growth potential of emerging companies.
  • Bureaucratic Hurdles: Complex and divided regulation hamper Europe. A American entrepreneur can launch a service under a single regulatory framework to access a consumer base of over 330 million. The European Union, despite a larger population, is divided among twenty-seven separate regimes, creating significant internal barriers.
  • Mindset Differences: Views on risk-taking vary greatly. In some EU nations, business failure was historically met with stigma, whereas in the US, it is often seen as a badge of experience.
  • Defense Spending: The US benefits from a tightly woven academic-military-industrial complex. The continent's chronic underinvestment in military capabilities has weakened its capacity for breakthrough innovation.

The Road Ahead: Reasons for Cautious Optimism

Despite these hurdles, there are causes for hope. Policymakers are increasingly aware of the existential challenge and have begun to advance serious reform. Key analyses on European competitiveness and the single market point to the necessity of major reforms.

With the right incentives and rule changes, Europe's strengths might enable far greater degrees of business-led breakthroughs.

The continent retains considerable strengths: skilled workforce, top-tier education systems, and world-class research institutions. Alongside a vast domestic consumer base and high savings rates, these foundations could unleash a new wave of venture creation.

Importantly, even if the EU does not become the leader in creating next-generation technologies, it can still dramatically boost economic output by adopting and adapting innovations from other regions.

A Critical Juncture

Europe now faces a critical crossroads. As the saying goes, economic erosion often happens "slowly, then all at once". To date, the continent's slide in innovation has been gradual. However, without decisive action to address its deep-seated problems, today's gradual weakening could give way to a sudden and irreversible loss of global economic relevance.
