Pat Cummins Poised for a Major Role in the Ashes

Australian cricket captain

The Australian skipper has taken 309 wickets in 71 appearances with an impressive average.

The Australian selection chief George Bailey has declared that pace spearhead Cummins will play a "major part" in the forthcoming historic rivalry.

Rumors had circulated that the veteran bowler might be unavailable due to a persistent back stress problem that had not yet healed.

Previous updates from the squad suggested no final decision had been made regarding his involvement, with the five-Test series scheduled to begin on 21 November in Western Australia.

Bailey expressed that Cummins is "building up" and was "optimistic" about the likelihood of taking part.

"We're aware that the window is narrowing and various factors around that, not only the physical problem, but further aspects," Bailey remarked.

"It's positive. There's strong faith that he will feature a key capacity. With luck it's the first Test. Otherwise, then we'll pick it up."

Past Concerns

The captain missed Australia's limited-overs series against New Zealand and India in the previous weeks after medical tests showed a lower back issue.

He has a history of recurring issues, with flare-ups in multiple past seasons leading to absences from multiple domestic campaigns in a limited period.

Cummins stated he would be proactive in his approach in his rehabilitation process to secure his spot for the series.

The selector indicated that it was unclear if the captain had resumed bowling as part of his comeback but acknowledged it was "getting tight" for him to recover fully for the first Test.

Contingency Plans

Should Cummins not be fit, veteran batsman Smith will assume leadership.

Versatile player Green was withdrawn recently from the ODI lineup for their ODI contests against India as a precautionary measure because of an abdominal issue.

Bailey described it as a "minor" injury and mentioned that he's scheduled to appear in the state-level matches, so will be "in a good place to resume bowling."

"We put so much time has gone into building out the plan for him to take part for the initial game as an all-rounder," Bailey explained.

"Originally, he'd only feature in the first two ODIs regardless. The way he swings the bat in limited-overs, even if it just sets him back for 24 more hours, we just made the decision to take a cautious route."
