Fed Cuts Borrowing Costs for Second Instance This Calendar Year During Financial Instability

The US central bank lowered borrowing costs on midweek, representing the second rate cut in the current year amid economic turbulence stemming from the federal government shutdown and tariff policies.

Decision Comes at Extraordinary Time for Federal Reserve

The decision to reduce the key rate by a quarter point to a range of 3.75% to 4% arrives at an unprecedented moment for the Fed. The institution has been under immense pressure to cut rates despite persistent inflation.

Central Bank Announcement Highlights Job Market Changes

In a announcement, the Federal Reserve stated that the unemployment rate had increased but stays modest. “Employment growth have slowed,” the release notes. “Inflation has risen and remains somewhat elevated.”

Government Shutdown Hinders Fed’s Job

The ongoing federal government shutdown, now one of the longest in American history, has also complicated the Fed’s job. Collection of important economic data has been indefinitely halted as staff at the Bureau of Labor Statistics are on leave during the closure.

Data Gap Affects Policy Decisions

The Fed typically studies BLS data to determine employment trends, including the number of employment gains added to the market and the current unemployment rate. The most recent employment data was released in the beginning of last month, before the closure, and gave a somewhat gloomy overview of the jobs market in the previous month.

The figure of jobs added to the economy in August was down by over 100k since the earlier season, and joblessness rose to four point three percent – the highest since three years ago.

Private Data Show Ongoing Slowdown

Though BLS was set to publish September’s employment data in early October, it suspended its publication when the shutdown began. Private payroll firm a leading payroll processor indicated recently that the business segment eliminated thirty-two thousand positions in September, a sign that the job market is continuing to slow.

“Supply as well as demand for workers has fallen significantly,” central bank head the Fed chairman stated earlier this month, which he had previously said comes from trade and immigration measures.

Inflation Report Reveals Gradual Increase

Though the bureau’s jobs report has been paused, the bureau still issued its inflation report for September that showed that costs are rising, albeit slowly. Prices increased three percent over the last year, the peak since January. In April, the yearly price increase was two point three percent, the lowest it has been since three years ago. The Fed’s target price increase is two percent.
