The EU could “respond swiftly and decisively” against what it deems “unjustified” travel bans issued by the United States against five Europeans involved in fighting online hate and misinformation, a European Commission spokesperson has said.
EU Officials Condemn US Move as ‘Coercion’
European leaders including the French president charged Washington of “coercion and intimidation”, after the travel bans targeted figures who have been at the heart of efforts to introduce legislation governing US-based technology firms.
“For too long, ideologues in Europe have spearheaded coordinated campaigns to coerce US companies to punish US perspectives they disagree with,” stated a senior US official online. “This government will no longer tolerate these egregious acts of extraterritorial censorship.”
Widespread Condemnation Across Europe
Nations including Germany, Spain, and the UK, alongside numerous EU representatives joined France in criticizing the decision.
The restrictions were imposed this week on a former EU commissioner involved in crafting the bloc’s Digital Services Act (DSA), as well as four activists fighting false information, including Germany and the United Kingdom.
A Deepening Dispute Over Regulation
The DSA is viewed by Washington as a type of speech restriction, while EU authorities contend the rules are necessary to control inflammatory language and falsehoods.
This disagreement risks becoming a facet of a much broader existing cultural and political conflict between Washington and Europe.
